Description

This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead Public Law Project’s exceptional team of caseworkers and to join our Senior Leadership Team.

By implementing an impact focused litigation strategy, our next Legal Director will help the most marginalised in society to hold the state to account, and improve public decision-making and access to justice. You will ensure that across the team we maintain a sustainable case load, including strategic cases that bring about systemic change and specialist advice led by individual clients that transforms their personal immigration, welfare, and legal aid problems.

Join PLP and you will be running the team that successfully challenged the prorogation of Parliament, helped survivors whose assets are controlled by their abuser to access legal aid, and put a stop to the no-notice removal policy affecting people claiming asylum. We are excited to learn where you might take us next. PLP is a friendly, diverse, and inclusive team. We are looking for a fantastic manager to provide inspiring and enthusiastic leadership and model collaborative, collegiate and supportive working in your teams and colleagues. You will have the integrity and confidence to call out when we can do better and the empathy and skill to help us improve whilst maintaining strong relationships and a sense of belonging and inclusion. As a senior leader, you will ensure the casework team works effectively with our other teams and be able to centre the best interests of our beneficiaries and the charity as a whole.

To be the successful candidate you will need to be a qualified lawyer with at least seven years’ experience. You will be an expert in public law, able to give specialist legal advice and have a good knowledge of the UK legal aid system. You will need to ensure our casework is expert, compliant, financially sustainable, impactful and works with and for the communities we serve.

This is a permanent, full time position, though we will consider part time applications. PLP offers flexible working, a wide-ranging wellbeing programme, 25 days annual leave (plus festive period closure), and 10% employer pension contribution after 12 months.

PLP is an equal opportunities and Disability Confident Employer, and we place a high value on diversity. Women, and people from the LGBTQ+ community and from a range of socio-economic backgrounds are represented at PLP right across the organisation, from juniors to senior management. We are taking action to further improve the number of Black and Asian people at PLP to better reflect the demographics of London and our beneficiaries.

As part of our commitment to recruit fairly we use anonymised-selection processes until interview, offer additional interview opportunities to the highest-scoring candidates from under-represented communities, and use ‘tie-breaker’ provisions at all stages of our selection process.
