Description

Department

History of Art at York is one of the largest and most dynamic communities of art historians in the UK, with eighteen colleagues who cover all periods from late antiquity to the present. The department ranked first for Environment and Impact in the recent Research Excellence Framework (2021), and in the top 10 overall. We teach approximately 180 undergraduate, 40 Masters, and 80 PhD students, who follow a wide range of programmes, including our BA in Curating and Art History. The department has piloted successful Fashion History modules, and now wishes to broaden its offering. Teaching in the department is supported by a friendly atmosphere, small-group teaching, regular study trips, and spectacular historic locations. The department has initiated innovative partnerships with museums, galleries, and heritage organisations, coordinated through York Art History Collaborations, and hosts the innovative Digital Museum of Dress Accessories.

Role

The Department seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Fashion History. We aim to recruit an exceptionally able scholar with a keen interest in developing innovative teaching programmes including a new Master’s programme in Fashion History. We welcome applications from scholars working on any aspect of Fashion History in the period since 1700, but preference may be given to those whose expertise goes beyond Europe and North America and/or complements existing departmental strengths, such as curating, Islamic art, intellectual property, and art law.

You should be developing a reputation in your field, with high-quality publications that address major questions, and well-developed plans for future research. Your application should demonstrate how your research complements and extends the department’s existing strength in Fashion History. You will be able to teach a range of modules, to contribute to curriculum development, and to supervise doctoral research. We expect the successful applicant to take advantage of the collegial and collaborative research environment at York. You will work closely with our existing museum and gallery partners, and nurture new student-focussed collaborations in the sector.

The post is available from 1 September 2024.
