The Advancement Division at Imperial College London is seeking a Head of Legal Services (Advancement). The Division responsible for securing support for the College, through building and managing strong, mutually beneficial relationships, with alumni and friends.
Working with more than 30 fundraisers, across four fundraising teams, Principal Gifts, Development, Development (Faculty of Medicine) and Global, the specialist role of Head of Legal Services (Advancement) will provide expert legal advice and support to secure a range of philanthropic income.
The role will also ensure compliance with laws relevant to the Advancement Division's activities, largely charity and trust laws, seek to reduce College risk and provide guidance of other related legal contracts and documentation, related to Advancement.
In circumstances where a matter requires specialist advice, this role will be required to instruct the College's external solicitors.

Duties and responsibilities:
You will provide authoritative legal advice to the members of the Advancement Division on issues ranging from more general donations, trust or commercial issues to specific project issues. You will respond to and negotiate donor-generated gift agreement documentation. Leading negotiations on legal and College policy aspects with third parties where required on a range of complex matters, including mitigating any risk or financial liabilities that the College might be exposed to You will ensure legal documentation adheres to and supports College policy and that financial and reputational risks to the College are addressed/minimised. You will advise in relation to fundraising regulation and compliance matters, in addition to advising on Charity and Trust law matters relevant to gifts provided for endowment, including legacies. You will also advise in relation to Data Protection law, adherence to PECR, GDPR and ICO guidance, as well as in relation to the Equality Act 2010 issues. In addition, you will also advise and negotiate in relation to other contractual matters relevant to the Advancement Division, for instance where the Division is procuring a service involving data processing. Liaising with Purchasing in relation to the same. You will manage and mentor the In-house Lawyer for Advancement. You will instruct and manage external counsel when necessary to ensure that the College's specific legal and compliance requirements are appropriately addressed when there is no in-house expertise. Essential requirements:

Educated to degree level or equivalent A UK-qualified solicitor or equivalent Suitable post-qualification experience of providing specialist charities and trusts law advice Significant post qualification experience general commercial advice at a reputable law firm or in an in-house environment Proven ability to provide practical, outcome-focused legal advice and support in a dynamic and evolving legal context Ability to draft and negotiate agreements including, among others, gift deeds, sponsorship agreements, declarations of trust Excellent knowledge of English contract law Specialist knowledge of trusts and charity law Knowledge and practical experience issues arising under the Equality Act 2010 Knowledge of data protection requirements, including in relation to the GDPR and current ICO guidance Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and interpersonal skills that enable the development of effective working relationships at all levels Politically astute and self-awareness to manage sensitive issues.
