We have an exciting opportunity to join us as our new Head of Environment, Health and Safety. This is a permanent role and can be based anywhere within our network, however regular travel to our Leeds and Sunderland offices is required. In this role you will take the lead as the subject matter expert advising on the management of Environmental and Health & Safety (EH&S) risks. You will be responsible for ensuring Northern Gas Networks (NGN) remains compliant with its approved Safety Case and all relevant EH&S legal obligations. Leading a high performing EH&S function, you will develop strategies and plans that enable NGN to embed best practice and continue strengthening its reputation for EH&S management.

Key accountabilities and responsibilities• Developing and implementing strategies to improve EH&S performance across NGN• Leading activities with EH&S regulatory agencies (e.g. Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Environment Agency) and their associated activities• Representing NGN when liaising with external stakeholders, such as attending industry EH&S meetings/forums/strategy groups• Providing support to review and update NGN's EH&S policies and procedures and acting as Technical Lead for all EH&S policies and Procedures, with responsibility for ensuring they are aligned to business activities/requirements and enable compliance with all applicable external and/or legislative requirements• Managing NGN's EH&S compliance framework and risk register and providing guidance and leading areas of activity which require focus• Promoting a culture of EH&S awareness and accountability and facilitating colleague–led EH&S improvements• Leading the external EMS assurance process (IS0 14001 accreditation)• Ensuring EH&S statutory and company reporting requirements are met

What we are looking for• Experience of leading an EH&S function within a high hazard / regulated environment• Recognised Health & Safety qualification at a minimum of Level 6 (e.g. NEBOSH Diploma)• Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. IOSH / IIRSM – preferably CMIOSH / MIIRSM)• Experience of leading technical incident investigations to establish immediate and underlying causes and identify opportunities to improve risk controls• Reporting experience – Statutory reporting including RIDDOR and GSMR• Exposure to dealing with external stakeholders such as Regulatory Authorities (e.g. Health and Safety Executive, Environment Agency), Suppliers and Contractors and Service Providers

What we Offer• Starting salary from GBP76,690• GBP6,500 car allowance and up to 20% bonus (dependent upon achievement of set targets) • 40 hours per week• 25 days annual leave (plus recognised bank holidays and 2 half days over the Christmas period) • SSP for first 7 calendar days then occupational sick pay • A generous stakeholder 5/10 pension scheme

We don't generate or sell the gas, but we transport it to homes and businesses in our region through a vast network of underground pipes. In fact, we own and maintain more than 37,000km of gas pipes – enough to stretch from Leeds to Sydney and back again. We cover large cities like Newcastle, Sunderland, Leeds, York, Hull, and Bradford, and our work extends to rural areas like North Yorkshire and Cumbria.
