Established over 75 years ago, our client who is a leading global design & manufacturer of electric motors for a multitude of industrial applications.
They have recently moved to a new multi-million pound purpose-built 160,000 square foot unit where it meets their current demands but also future proofing them for further growth and development and with that are recruiting now for a Head of Engineering to join their Senior Leadership Team.
As the Head of Engineering, you will be looking after 25 staff which includes 8 direct reports and be responsible for leading, motivating & developing the research and development department consisting of design engineering, production engineering, project management, sample pack, testing and change management, to ensure the technical and developmental objectives of all related team outputs are achieved.

Key responsibilities;
Manage key objectives and work assignments within the Engineering & Projects functions, setting targets and KPIsManage the workload, quality, and timeliness of the outputs from the project management team across projects and provide guidance & direction on workload prioritisation according to the business strategyEnsure excellent capabilities and outputs in product design & development by building upon the team and structure to align new product development with Company strategyBe the primary technical knowledge interface for working with our customers and suppliers on product opportunities, performance improvements and technical issues resolutionAct as the technical lead for the Company's knowledge of engineering & design standards and requirementsEnsure a collaborative approach between engineering and the cross-functional teams within the business and build cross-group relationships with the parent company, working with the group R&D teams to ensure global alignment and successManage Engineering & Projects operating budgets including proposals for departmental development & engineering equipmentReview and improve departmental engineering processes, procedures, and production documentation, to ensure right-first-time design for product performance and manufacturabilityBe a champion and facilitator for implementing and applying Lean-CI and VA/VE tools and techniques in engineering to support operational productivity improvementsDevelop the team to become a high performing unit, improving service levels and, importantly, working with the leadership team to deliver value to the customersDrive departmental training, development, and investment plans, in line with the engineering and product strategy needs of the business and to recruit skilled engineering and project staff requiredMaintain the Company's knowledge regarding engineering design & manufacturing standards & requirementsKeep up-to-date with the latest technologies and systems developments relevant to product design tools and manufacturing equipment capabilities and drive recommendations & justifications for investment in these This position requires the following key skills and attributes:
Engineering degree level qualification in mechanical or electrical design as a minimumPrevious experience of working within an electro-mechanical environmentProven experience in both engineering & management roles, with additional experience in production/industrialisation management being an advantageStrong leadership skills with the proven ability to motivate, manage and develop teamsProject management experience and training, with a knowledge of structured PM methodologiesAnalytical and able to solve complex problems of varying naturesStrong interpersonal & communication skillsA track record of successfully representing a company technically with third partiesDemonstrable knowledge of relevant machining, fabrication, and assembly capital equipment technologies and capabilitiesSelf-driven, results oriented and passionate about driving improvements and delivering in a time driven environment
Experience in Drives and Controls is an advantageExperience in using LEAN-CI tools, and techniques including Design for Six Sigma, Kaizen, VSM, SMED, in a manufacturing engineering context would be an advantage
