A rare LAB Series L5 in excellent condition. In mint condition these amps sell for prices of £850 plus.
These amplifiers are rare and built to an exceptional quality if you are reading this you are probably familiar with the Lab series amps. For those who are less familiar, The L5 was famously BB Kings amp of choice. He bought 5 or 6 of them himself and would specify them as his preference when performing. He’d settle for a fender twin if an L5 wasn’t available but strongly preferred the L5. Ty Tabor and Allan Holdsworth are also known Lab Series users.
Norlin, who owned Gibson and Moog at that time, Tasked Robert Moog with designing a rival to the Fender Twin.
These are widely considered to be the best solid state guitar amps ever made, perhaps along with the Roland Jazz Chorus although the L5 is warmer and has overdrive characteristics that are very similar to a tube amp. It’s been described as having a blackface character.
It’s a two channel amp, the first channel is very simple and, from all accounts, is very similar to the twin with a balanced clean sound that makes an excellent base for pedals. The second channel is much more sophisticated. The base tone is still a twin but the centre frequency for the midrange control is adjustable which means you can alter the tonality of the amp significantly from a woody scoop to a British mid-forward grind. The multifilter control is subtle but seems to add a bit of edge to the drive without getting harsh. It’s a dynamic amp, responding to pick attack and cleaning up if the guitars volume control is rolled back.
This amp is capable of high volume levels. It will stay clean if that’s what you want it to do. I’ve not compared them myself but I’ve seen it said that it’s at least as loud as a twin.
All the electronics have been cleaned and all work as they should. The speakers are original. The grill cloth has been replaced with an Oxblood vintage cloth (which looks beautiful) Brand new tolex all round. Unfortunately the original Lab Series Logo is missing but I have had one made and it looks great. I have the original handle and castor holders (if the new owner would ever want to replace these) Personally it is easier to carry without a handle and it has Rubber feet off a Fender twin I feel this gives the Amp more stability.
