Garden Manager

The Laskett Gardens, Much Birch, Herefordshire

The Organisation

Perennial is a charity dedicated to helping people in horticulture. Together with our network of partners, we provide free support, information, advice, financial assistance and services for horticulturalists and their loved ones experiencing illness, disability, bereavement, family breakdown and financial difficulties.

We have a real focus on improving the health and well-being outcomes of people working in horticulture and have an ambitious preventative strategy to create better futures for people working in horticulture.

This is a rare opportunity to take responsibility for a garden, created by Sr Roy Strong and his late wife Julia Trevelyan Oman, that is well established in terms of its significance and reputation. The successful candidate will have a key role in the work that Perennial will do over the coming years to take the wonderful private garden that Sir Roy has so generously given to us and establish it as a leading visitor destination for garden lovers across the UK and abroad. This will require a gardening leader with vision, top level horticultural knowledge and skills, excellent team building skills and a passion for the project of developing The Laskett as a must-visit and repeat-visit garden.

We are now looking for a Garden Manager to join our team in The Laskett Gardens on a permanent, full-time basis.

The Benefits

- Salary of circa GBP35,000 per annum - 25 days' holiday per annum plus bank holidays (pro rata) increasing with service - Pension - Sickness pay - Buy extra leave - Time off for dependents

This is an incredible opportunity for an experienced garden manager with a great understanding of visitor attractions and team-leading to join our brilliant organisation and bring our vision of The Laskett Gardens to life.

You'll be the driving force behind maintaining and developing our garden's unique charm, fostering a culture that turns every visit into a rich and rewarding experience for visitors, volunteers and staff.

What's more, with continuous professional development opportunities, you'll be able to tend to your career, allowing it to bloom and grow to new heights!

The Role

As our Garden Manager, you will oversee The Laskett Gardens and seek to create an incredible attraction for visitors that will act as a mainstay for the Perennial vision and mission.

Managing the day to day running of the garden and supervision of staff, volunteers and contractors, you will ensure that the history, ecology, evolved design and artistic integrity of the garden are conserved and presented to an exemplary standard.

You will also ensure that the retail, catering and visitor facilities are managed effectively, including stock ordering, control, health and hygiene regulations, food handling, cleaning and maintenance.

Additionally, you will:

- Recruit, train, manage and develop staff and volunteers - Oversee the development and delivery of educational, training and skills activities and events - Co-ordinate the Laskett Garden Committee - Manage allocated budgets - Lead site-based garden and visitor services projects

About You

To be considered as our Garden Manager, you will need:

- Experience managing a garden of quality to a high standard - Experience managing a team of gardeners and administrators - Experience of visitor attractions - Experience of health and safety in a garden environment - A full, valid driving licence
