There are alot of over night recovery cowboy's that start up shop using motor trade insurance with personal use of a tow-truck added to that policy.

This insurance is only for vehicles the policy holder owns or sells, but instead the cowboys start trading as a Recovery Business when infact their not insured or covered to do so and nor are the cars that are being recovered.

When VOSA or the POLICE check via there ANPR CAMERAS and find that the insurance held does not cover Hire/Reward or Vehicle Recovery, the Truck and vehicle are seized and impounded for no insurance., Hugh fines for the truck driver, points on there licence, storage costs from the police and impound company. More then likely, the cowboys get their fine paid and truck out the pound, but leaving the unfortunate customers car still in the impound as they still don’t have insurance.

For the unlucky customer they have to pay and prove ownership of the vehicle, which can be days or months depending on the V5 or invoice of sale, then booking a Genuine recovery company to collect the car from the impound.
