Smart data is made whenever we engage with the digital world – when we buy something, ‘like’ something, or get directions. If used for scientific research, smart data can help us understand important social challenges – from preventing diseases to tackling climate change.
About the role
We are now seeking a Deputy Director for Smart Data Research UK. This role provides an opportunity for an exceptional leader to shape and deliver a transformational shift in the responsible use of smart data for research.
You will have an important leadership role and will work closely with the Director of Smart Data Research UK, senior UKRI colleagues across the research councils, world leading experts, industry leaders and senior policymakers. You will be a powerful advocate for the power of smart data, influencing the direction of a fast-developing field.
Key responsibilities
Shape and implement strategies that position Smart Data Research UK as a world leading programme for the creation, organisation and safe access to smart data.
Build long-term strategic partnerships with data owners, leveraging existing established partnerships and networks.
Engage in outreach, promotion and policy engagement, supporting the Director and working across government and the wider landscape.
Ensuring that the programme in well managed to realise the significant benefits set out in the business case, managing risks and issues across the programme and ensure timely, corrective actions are undertaken.
Make a full contribution as a member of the ESRC Senior Leadership Team across the range of strategic management issues considered by the Council, as well as wider UKRI teams and governance.

Person Specification
Proven ability to lead and inspire a team to deliver a successful programme in a complex field.
Experience of working with many delivery partners, building strong relationships and credibility across different sectors (e.g. industry, academia, charities, government)
Highly developed communication skills and ability to influence at senior levels, including making technical work accessible to non-expert audiences.
Strong strategic and analytical skills, with the ability to map and understand elements of the data and research landscape and consider how to build upon and integrate existing capability.
Proven capability to develop and implement programmes at pace and on a significant scale across multiple stakeholders in both technical and non-technical environments.
