Crafts Council Chair of Trustees Recruitment

Role: Chair of Crafts Council Board of Trustees

Reports to: Crafts Council Board of Trustees

Direct Reports: Crafts Council Executive Director

Nature of Role: Voluntary

Activity Taking Place: Some in person meetings and events, with various meetings delivered remotely (online)

Deadline for applications: 26 January 2024.

Tenure: Chair to be appointed in early 2024.

As Chair of Crafts Council’s Board of Trustees, you will provide inspiring leadership and strategic direction to the Crafts Council at a pivotal point in its journey of change and renewal. You will be a passionate Crafts Council ambassador and play a leading role in making the craft sector more inclusive and collaborative, creating space for new ideas. Your experience and insight mean you are able to make bold, brave decisions and unite our organisation behind a shared vision. Your role is also crucial in helping us build a culture of philanthropy and develop more ambitious strategic partnerships so we can discover new income sources to support our work all over the UK.

The Chair of Crafts Council Board of Trustees will:

Take the Board and the Senior Team on a transformational journey

Ensure the Board follows its rules and regulations in line with legislation and our charitable objectives

Team up with the Executive Director to shout from the rooftops about the Crafts Council

Support the Executive Team in making friends with new and old supporters

Keep the Council focused on its goals (and away from distractions)

Make sure Trustee meetings are on point, timely, and effective

Appoint the Vice Chair and Chairs of Crafts Council sub-committees and lead the Nominations Committee

Be the go-to person for Trustees whenever they need advice and a wise advisor to the Executive Director

Take charge of the annual Trustee evaluation process

Follow the Crafts Council Code of Conduct and all other rules including confidentiality and managing conflicts of interest

Skills and Qualities

You will be:

The Crafts Council champion, embodying Nolan's seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership

Someone who is totally committed to our mission and excited to give the time and energy needed to the challenges and opportunities ahead

Comfortable with change management and big picture thinking, leading the board and senior team to get things done

Caring about the diverse range of UK making and makers and the wider cultural and creative industries

Personally passionate about diversity and social justice and the potential for craft to make positive change

Tech-savvy and up for trying new ways to do business and solve problems

An experienced Chair with a brilliant track record

Able to talk the talk with everyone, from craft enthusiasts to influential friends

Able to provide a network of contacts and willingness to open doors and make waves to support our fundraising

Knowledgeable about charity law, accounting and corporate governance

Able to provide management for the Executive Director and be a respected adviser to the senior team
