Job Title: Climate Action and Engagement Manager

About The Role
We are hiring for a sustainability specialist who can develop and deliver on climate action and biodiversity-related initiatives through engagement, advocacy and clear communications, both internally and externally. This role will be instrumental in accelerating Springer Nature's plans to meet its climate and broader sustainability aims and objectives (including meeting targets verified by the "Science Based Targets initiative"), acting as an advisor and change champion for sustainability initiatives across the company. They will also build relationships internally and externally to build the profile of Springer Nature's sustainability action plans.
Role Responsibilities
Work with the Director of Sustainability and Climate Action Officer to deliver our roadmap to net zero (which include targets verified by the Science Based Targets Initiative) and the commitments to the Climate Pledge and SDG Publishers Compact. Develop and deliver strategies, messaging and tactics that address material environmental impacts of Springer Nature, with a focus on carbon reduction. Widen out strategies related to biodiversity risks and nature-based solutions. Act as a centre of excellence on climate action, working with external and internal experts to collate and interpret the latest thinking on climate action, and Springer Nature's carbon and other environmental data, and translate into actionable strategies for Springer Nature and its employees. Use data from our operations and suppliers, and knowledge of external best practice and emerging regulatory changes (including reporting requirements) to demonstrate progress (or challenges) and model the potential impact of upcoming initiatives. With key stakeholders from the Sustainable Business steering group, Environment Committee and others to action plan and agree pace and prioritisation. Build strong relationships with operational and other relevant colleagues to make change happen across the organisation in line with Springer Nature's Environment Policy, the commitment to the Climate Pledge and to minimise other environmental impacts. With communications colleagues, further develop Springer Nature's role as a science communicator and leader in the area of climate action, working on different communications approaches, such as speakers series, microsites, videos etc, making use of publishing and editorial content and people. Seek opportunities to engage the wider Springer Nature employee base, via the internal Green Impact Network, HR and Communications colleagues to further harness employee enthusiasm and action on climate and the environment. Be the subject matter expert for formal reporting on climate action through our sustainability and carbon reporting, website and other channels and, working with communications colleagues, develop new and creative ways to communicate. Participate in external stakeholder groups where working in partnership with others will drive change more quickly. Experience, Skills and Qualifications:
Essential
Detailed knowledge and experience of relevant sustainability issues and the case for business action on climate and the UN SDGs. Experience in developing sustainability initiatives and working with others to deliver successfully and demonstrate carbon reduction (or other environmental benefits). Some experience of GHG accounting (including Scope 3), modelling and frameworks such as CDP and SBTi. Knowledge around disclosure frameworks relevant to sustainability performance is an advantage. Some understanding and experience of change management in the context of sustainability initiatives, including building engagement using multi-channel approaches and with different stakeholder groups. Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to cultivate strong working relationships across multiple teams, cultures and geographies, with a range of stakeholder groups including industry, media or policy. Experience developing community and / or environment engagement programmes or implementing operational efficiencies in a corporate setting. Experience working in, and influencing colleagues across, global and cross-functional teams.
