At an exciting time in the College’s journey, Sidney Sussex College seeks to appoint a capable financial and operational leader as its next Bursar. Located in the heart of the historic city of Cambridge, Sidney Sussex was founded in 1596 and is the youngest of Cambridge’s “old colleges”. The College is proud of its 425 year history, but equally is eager to develop and meet the challenges of our time. The College is known for its friendly atmosphere and its small and intimate community.
As the most senior financial and operational manager of the College, the Bursar will work closely with Sidney Sussex’s new Master, Professor Martin Burton. They will balance day-to-day operational activity and longer-term strategy, overseeing all areas of finance and administration, notably: financial planning and management, investment, HR services, IT, staffing, estates and legal affairs. They will advise the College’s Fellowship on all financial and operational matters, and will be responsible for carefully stewarding – and maximising the return on - the College’s assets. They will carry responsibility for over 100 non-academic staff.
Ideal candidates will bring a successful track record of financial and operational management and strategic planning. The new Bursar will be a fast-learner, with the ability to translate and explain financial data. Collegiate and flexible, the successful candidate will be committed to the College community. Candidates do not have to be qualified accountants, but they will understand accounting and investments, and will bring experience in operational areas, such as HR, IT and estates. They will be an inspirational leader and a confident operator, able to engage intellectually with the Governing Body and donors, as well as staff and students.
The post carries a Fellowship of the College, reflecting the seniority and significance of the post. The Bursar is expected to be an active and engaged member of the College community.
