18" hickory haft, with cypress/oak/walnut/purple heart wedge!

Original haft, original paint. Very carefully restored - bit sharpened, rewedged tightly, multiple coats of oil.

Excellent quality American made hatchet, nice weight, and no abuse which is unusual for vintage tools like this. Apparently the design/spec was drawn up in WWI and reinstated in WWII, but as the second world war was a very different combat arena these hatchets were not seen as too useful or practical by the troops. Many got left behind by troops returning to the US as they weren't considered valuable and seen as another heavy item to ditch and save weight.

Lovely collectors item, or very usable wood processing tool.

Similar hatchets in far worse condition available for twice amount on online auction sites, this is a very fair price.
