India warns IT companies about inaction on deepfakes
India warns IT companies about inaction on deepfakes
Hamilton, New Jersey
Nov 18, 2024
Description
Following a warning by a well-known figure about a deepfake advertisement using his likeness to endorse a gaming app, India has informed tech companies that it is ready to impose bans if they do not take proactive measures against deepfake videos, a senior government minister said. The severe warning is being issued as New Delhi acts upon its November caution regarding upcoming rules to identify and prevent the spread of fake media. The country's IT rules will be changed by the ministry by next week, according to deputy IT minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, in order to provide clear legislation that would combat deepfakes.
