Although it looks lower and less rugged than traditional Jeep models, its off-road ability is still a key selling point for the Cherokee, it is able to manage far rougher terrain than other mid sized 4x4s on the market. Two different four-wheel drive systems are available, both of which feature the ability to disconnect drive to the rear axle during normal driving conditions to save fuel. All Cherokees offered in the UK bar the Trailhawk are powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine with a choice of power outputs - either 138bhp or 168bhp. Practicality is very good with a folding front passenger seat standard and plenty of space for rear passengers. There is also a small hidden storage area under the flip up front passenger seat base. Jeep Cherokee safety has been awarded a maximum five star overall rating by independent safety body Euro NCAP, from whom it also earned a ''Best in Class'' title for the ''Small off - road 4x4'' category with an overall score of 83 percent. Maximum towing capacity is 2,475kg (for 168bhp 4x4 models), which is a very strong performance in its class. The Cherokee is actually composed on the road, it grips on twisty roads. The brakes are very good, too. All four-wheel-drive Cherokees include Jeeps Selec -Terrain system, a switch located near the gear lever which enables the driver to choose from four modes - Snow, Sand/Mud Sport and Auto. With decent on-road manners to go with its off-road aptitude and more affordable running costs than others in its class, the Cherokee is a good choice for a small 4x4.
