The E30 M3 Convertible is a car that combines high performance
and open-top luxury in a way only seen previously at the highest
echelons of motoring. Like the coupe, the Convertible was derived
from motorsport and the E30 M3 was the only DTM homologation model
available in a convertible version. The first BMW M3 was a car that
could be driven on both country roads and racetracks with equal
ease, a characteristic that still defines all BMW M cars today. The
Convertible accentuated the sporting zest with the ability to feel
the fresh mountain air rushing while cruising through the Alpine
passes upon its launch in 1988.
As one of just 786 hand-assembled examples produced at BMWs
Motorsport facility in Garching, Germany, this 1991 example is
finished in attractive Diamond Black Metallic with a Black folding
soft top. Similar to the Coupes, the M3 variant received box-flared
fenders, revised bumpers, and side skirts. Powering the car is a
2.3-liter S14 inline-four mated to a Getrag five-speed manual
transmission before being sent to the rear wheels through a
limited-slip differential. Additional exterior features include
headlight wipers, headlight wipers, twin exhaust tips, and 16 inch
BBS Style 5 wheels.
Opening the door reveals the Silver leather-trimmed interior with
manually adjustable Recaro sports bucket seats that feature
electric heating and tri-color M accents. Framed by the
leather-wrapped four-spoke steering wheel are VDO gauges informing
the driver with a 260 km/h speedometer, 8,000 rpm tachometer, and
oil temperature gauges. Interior features include power windows, an
onboard computer, remote-controlled power mirrors, and a BMW
Bavaria C Business cassette stereo.
The car is reported to have been placed into storage in the early
1990s, where it remained until it was purchased in 2022 and
imported to the United States in 2023. As a result, the car shows
an incredibly low 1,177 kilometers or approximately 731 miles at
the time of cataloging. It should be noted that, while this M3 is
in excellent condition, the power function of the convertible top
is inoperable, yet it continues to retain its manual operation
allowing the driver/owner to enjoy top up or top down motoring as
they wish. Offered in phenomenally original condition as a result
of its remarkably low mileage, with original protective wax present
on the undercarriage and suspension, this 1991 BMW M3 Convertible
remains a veritable once-in-a-lifetime addition to any BMW
enthusiasts stable.
