The R107 (SL) series from Mercedes Benz was a long-running series of two-seat convertibles produced from 1971 through the 1989 model year with over a quarter-million vehicles manufactured during the production run.
The car was offered with a variety of engine sizes over that time span, with both inline six-cylinder powerplants and V8 engines being available in displacements from 3.0 to 5.6 liters. The sporty two-seater quickly gained popularity all over the world but proved to achieve wide acceptance in the United States luxury sports car market.
US sales accounted for approximately two-thirds of the R107 series sales, nearly 160,000 units in total. The car was a hit with the entertainment industry, as SL models were featured in many highly rated televisions shows and feature films from the 1970s through the 1990s.
Sold with a convertible top as standard equipment, many buyers opted for the optional removeable hardtop making the car an all-season performer. The SL series featured unitized body construction with a 96.9 inch wheelbase.
The 5.6 liter powerplant displacing 227 horsepower and generating 287 lb/ft or torque was backed with either a four-speed manual transmission or a five-speed manual transmission.
The car had a dry weight of 3,650 pounds, giving it a reasonable power-to-weight ratio for a luxury sports car from that time period. The 560SL was introduced near the end of the production cycle, hitting US dealerships for the 1986 model year.
It was the flagship of the SL series until production ended in the 1989 model year. This 1986 Mercedes Benz 560SL has been a part of the present owners portfolio for about two years.
It is equipped with all of the options one would expect from a luxury sports vehicle of that time and presents very nicely.
Finished in pastel beige with a matching hardtop and convertible top, the interior is crme beige.
