Here's a special truck that only Dodge would build, the 1978 Lil
Red Express. Special because, as Car & Driver stated, it was the
fastest American-made vehicle 0-100mph available that year. This
one is amazingly original including its sheetmetal and paint, along
with the 360 cubic inch V8 engine. It's mated to the A-727
LoadFlite automatic transmission. '78 Expresses have several unique
features, so let's check them. Of course, the aforementioned 360
Express engine, a special dual exhaust system with functional
chrome stacks, crossover pipe and Hemi mufflers; and staggered
chrome wheels - 7 inches wide in front, 8 inches in back. The '78
featured a 100 mph speedometer vs 85 mph on the '79, and the '78's
Bright Canyon Red paint is unique as well. The graphics and wood
trim also distinguish the truck. This example also features the
Tuff 3-spoke steering wheel and the optional bucket seats with
fold-down center armrest. It has a premium cloth bed cover and
inside a fire extinguisher is on board. These are hard to find,
especially in this kind of original condition, as only 2188 were
produced in 1978, versus 5118 in 1979. The 1978 Dodge Lil Red
Express pickup combines performance, unique appearance, and
comfort, and is a very desirable and collectible vehicle today.
