The period equivalent of today's S-Class, and perhaps the best and most attainable example of Stuttgart's golden-age greatness. The big four door came into the world in 1965 powered by a modest 2.5L six-cylinder and was dubbed the 250S/SE. In time-honoured Benz fashion, the next half a decade saw the model receive a host of different power plants, a long wheelbase variant, drop tops, and three different overhead-cam V8's.

In 1972, the engine swapping came to a head, this year gifted the short-wheelbase W108 with the 4.5-litre V8 which produced a healthy 230hp. This combination sold for only one year stateside, and the model offered the best of both worlds pairing the nimble chassis of the short-wheelbase model with some of the thrust of the 300-hp long-wheelbase 300SEL's.

This particular example is reported to be vastly original and contains an expert technical report from Poland to back this up. It is presented in gorgeous condition with exceptional aesthetics inside and out - a proper bit of automotive eye-candy.

✅ THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

● Manufactured in February 1972

● Original Mercedes-Benz owners manual and paperwork booklets

● The vehicle was used in the USA for most of its life

● North Carolina certificate of title from 2008

● Service booklet states multiple moves from Florida, to Ohio, to Washington

● Purchased in 2013 by the previous owner and imported from the USA to Poland

● Exported from Poland into the UK, satisfying post-import clearance checks in May of 2023

✅ THE INTERIOR

● Original interior presented in lovely condition throughout, some gentle signs of patina and use but no damage that we can see

● The expert technical opinion denotes requirement for upholstery covers needing repair - we're unable to spot where however

● Original gauges and Becker radio, all functional with no signs of damage, just very gentle use

● Wooden dash trim has gentle patina from age, it has gained a light cracking effect which is characteristic of dried out wood

● Optional air conditioning unit is present and completely functional - a rare and desirable option to be had in one of these!

● Original carpets are present and show no signs of damage, there are gentle signs of use and age throughout but nothing out with the norm

● All door cards are well kept with light signs of use - again the brightwork here could do with a little attention in some areas due to peeling

● Overall, the interior of this Benz is a lovely place to be, filled with tell tale signs of love and affection, you can feel the decades that have passed. Originality is hard to come by, even more so in this kind of volume - this is a proper needle in a haystack.

✅ THE EXTERIOR

● Original bodywork and paint, the technical review notes that the paintwork does show some signs of where however this is to be expected of any vehicle this age

● Front lights are in fantastic condition with no signs of damage and excellent surrounding brightwork trim

● Original wheels are in lovely condition with gentle kerb rash in areas - al shod in period-correct whitewall tyres

● Original badge designations mounted on the rear

● Body underside appears to be in excellent condition

✅ THE MECHANICS

● Desirable late-model 4.5-litre V8, based off the earlier 3.5L engine

● Automatic transmission reported to be in good condition with smooth shifts and no unwelcome noises during shifting

● Rear-drive configuration

● Excellent mechanical health with a healthy service history

● No mechanical idiosyncrasies to be noted in the technical review which is a pleasure to see

● Technical report notes that there is some corrosion on the chassis underneath - however we're unable to locate where, it all looks rather well sorted!

● Extensive list of mechanical maintenance between 1994 and 2011, which comes to nearly £12,000 - this is seriously worth a read through and would take far too long to list

● Excellently mechanically cared for throughout the vehicles life with no regard to cost

✅ SUMMARY

The 280 SE is a staple in Mercedes-Benz history, a time where the three-pointed star was not in a battle for performance and power figures, but more so focused on elegance and their own unique design ques that denoted pure luxury for those who were lucky enough to afford and run one at the time.

This original example would make for a stunning collection piece, and even a lovely weekend toy given the fantastic maintenance history - this bit of German Muscle is still ready to stretch its 125mph legs.
