Intro
This is a numbers matching 1971 BMW 2800CS e9 in Nachtblau exterior and white leather interior. It has approximately 140,000 miles with factory air conditioning, power windows and a four-speed manual transmission. It is believed to be a three-owner car originally registered in Southern California where it was reported to be a factory show car for an L.A. BMW dealer. The seller has owned the car for over 30 years. During that period, he completed an extensive exterior repaint, reupholstered the interior and numerous other restorations during his ownership. It is in Virginia and has a clear title.
Exterior
The exterior of this Karmann designed e9 was stripped down to bare metal and seller states that there was no rust or body filler found. This BMW coupe was then painted the same factory Nachtblau color that it had when it rolled off the assembly line. It has Yokohama Avid Touring S P195/70R14 tires mounted on BMW OEM rims with disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear.
Interior
The seats were recently reupholstered while the door cards, carpeting, sun visors and headliner are all original. Wooden dash and door trim is starting to show its age with minor cracking but is still very presentable. Owner has oiled the wood to curtail further deterioration. The odometer was repaired and shows 130,000 miles. The seller states he added perhaps 10,000 miles before it was repaired and estimates 140,000 miles. All the gauges work except the clock. The dash top does not have any cracks, the headliner is tight, there are no leaks around the window seals and the rear shelf is excellent. The only interior modification is an updated stereo.
Mechanicals
This 1971 BMW 2800CS comes from the factory with the 2,788 cc 170.1 cu in engine that produces 168hp at 6,000 rpm. The vehicle has the original engine outfitted with Solex carburetors and its original transmission the car was born with. At the advice of his mechanic, seller replaced the head with a 1980’s five series head which is less prone to cracking. The original head is numbers matching and in perfect condition and included in the sale.
Summary
BMW introduced the E9 in a range of coupés produced from 1968 to 1975. What makes this 1970 E9 attractive is that it is numbers matching and the engine and drivetrain are current on maintenance. This BMW comes complete with manuals and service records and an interior that was already reupholstered.
