1965 Ford Shelby Cobra
In 1961 a retired race car driver had a dream to find a sports car
that could fit a more powerful V8 motor. That man was Carroll
Shelby and that car became the Shelby Cobra. Shelby wrote to AC
asking them to join him on this endeavor and they agreed should a
suitable engine be found. He initially contacted Chevrolet but with
the recent introduction of the Corvette, they refused to join him
on the project. His next stop was Ford who understandably wanted
something to compete with the Corvette and thus the Cobra was born.
These cars have an extensive history in the automobile world and
make for some of the coolest street cars on the road. These factory
race cars can fetch in the millions of dollars nowadays which is
why car builders are turning towards replicas to create their dream
cars. This very nice 1965 Cobra is extremely well built using the
best components available. The owner spent around $140K having it
built. It was constructed by SMC and although they are no longer in
business everything we have read online points to them being very
high quality. The body is painted in Yellow with dual Red racing
stripes that run the full length of the car. On the iconic front
end the car has the chrome piece around the radiator opening framed
by the bumperettes. It also has the full bumper in rear. Behind the
driver is the single hoop roll bar and the car also received the
large chrome gas cap where some manufactures used a smaller
version. The windshield is slightly tinted and has both upper and
side wind deflectors. The rides on a set of the correct style
Shelby Cobra wheels which are true knock offs and have 305/35/18
tires in rear with 245/40/18s up front.
You see some of these with small block Ford motors in them so we
were delighted to open the scooped hood to reveal the Shelby
Aluminum 427. It has been bored to 496 ci which offers all the
power you could ask for delivering 750hp with 690 ft/lbs of torque.
These were race cars after all so this one stays true to its
heritage. It has been fitted with a Fast XFI 2.0 8 stack fuel
injection system which not only improves performance but looks
great. The surrounding engine compartment looks good too being all
custom finished out and painted Red to match the stripes. The car
runs strong and also features Blue Thunder aluminum heads, Crower
titanium rods, a Billet Windberg light weight crankshaft, and Race
tec pistons (10.5 to 1 compression). It was built by FE Specialties
out of California and sounds great through the custom side exhaust.
Backing the motor up is a Tremec T-56 Magnum 6 speed transmission.
The car has 3:55 gears in the rear so not only is it quick it can
cruise down the highway comfortably. The engine is capable of 8000
rpm but has a rev limiter set down to 6500 rpm.
The cockpit of the car is all finished out in an Olive Green color
with Yellow accents. It has dual bucket seats and a custom center
console which houses the shifter and cupholders. The dash is all
custom as well and features Yellow flamed Cobra gauges in Red
bezels to tie into the cars exterior. This is also where you will
find all of your controls along with the very cool push button
start set up. The floors have a diamond plate design and the pedals
are from "AC". The trunk is all finished out and although these
cars aren't known for trunk space there is still plenty of room for
a few tools and your car show gear.
This is a really high end Cobra and you couldn't ask for a better
drivetrain in one of these. It comes with a custom tonneau cover
and the car is titled as a 1965 Ford Convertible.
