Suspension with Coil SpringsDebuted in 1954, the new 220 series
from Mercedes-Benz featured modern styling, unitized construction,
and roomy accommodations, plus a new OHV 2.2-liter inline
six-cylinder engine. The uprated 220 S arrived in August 1957 with
dual Solex carburetors yielding 120 hp and 100 mph capability.
While technically mass-produced, the 220-series two-door models
were hand-finished by the renowned craftsmen at Mercedes-Benz's
Sindelfingen works to impressive standards, justifying their
substantial pricing. In all, just 3,429 examples of the 220 S Coupe
and Cabriolet were built from 1957 to 1959.According to its
accompanying Daimler-Benz production record, this 1957
Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet is an original US-specification
example finished with specially ordered Light Green Metallic paint
and red leather upholstery. Retaining its original engine, it
benefits handsomely from 20 years of prior ownership and care under
an avid Mercedes-Benz enthusiast, including a meticulous
restoration by noted Mercedes-Benz expert Bruce Adams. Among its
many highlights, this 220 S Cabriolet features exceptional fit and
finish, metallic paint custom pigmentmatched in Germany, bespoke
fitted luggage handmade in France, and correct tags, markings,
finishes, and equipment throughout. Confirming its excellence, the
220 S was awarded the Corinthian Award at the 2022 Keels & Wheels
Concours d'Elegance. Accompanied by a document folio containing
original manuals, plus a tool kit, work light, jack, and spare
tire, this rare and stylish 1957 Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet is
ready for continued shows and classic tours.
