My story
I would like to introduce you to Benji (I call him Benny). This handsome boy has had a rough start in life (neglectful home) but has become an amazing dog person that has flourished so much in our loving home with positive reinforcement, regular feeding times and a treat before bed.
Benny is a 46 lb orange/white 8 yr old, neutered Brittany. UTD on vaccines, HW/Tick Neg (on prevention), housebroken, healthy and microchipped.
‘Benny’ is so dang sweet. He loves to cuddle and likes to lay his head in my lap while I read or watch television. He likes to put his soft little face in the palm of your hand. He has a few (very cute) quirks about him. He needs a ‘place to be’ in whatever room you are in. He has a dog bed in our living room, and upstairs he has his ‘spot’ it is on a large ottoman that I used with a previous foster dog. When rewarded with a bone or larger treat, he will hold it in his mouth and walk from outside/inside room to room wondering where he can hide it to enjoy later. Also, he has a special toy that he likes to have with him, while some other dog toys must be destroyed – lol.
He is completely house broken, and very good at going to the door and tapping on it to let you know he needs outside. You might even put a little bell on the doorknob for his benefit. With any pet, much like a toddler – I felt it was up to me to learn his signs and be ready to “go outside/go potty”.
He knows how to ‘sit’, and if you use treats and encouragement, he is willing to learn more. He is somewhat timid on a leash, very well behaved. He seems to walk beside/behind me more than pulling in front of me (like my other pet). We feel that it he will excel in a home that has at least one other playful dog. You can see by his photos that he enjoys his friends and being with his ‘People’.
Benny does need a physical fence. He absolutely loves the dog park and is friendly with all the dogs that are there. I have never seen him be mean spirited or aggressive to people or other dogs. Just FYI: I’ve never had a cat as an adult, so I have no idea how he would react to living with a feline.
Benny does not need (or has not needed) to be crated in my home, and that is my personal choice. I have been made aware that he may become very upset should he be crated – pretty sure this is from his upbringing. Regarding bad behavior: If he ‘acts out’, our reprimand only involves a spray bottle of water. The minute I pick up the bottle, he understands he needs to correct his actions right away.
Once Benny loves you, he is very loyal, and mindful of your verbal/visual commands. Once he trusts you, he will always show love to you. He will in turn show his love to you twice as much and more.
He is looking for a home where he will be with someone - dog friend and/or human friend - at all times. He loves to wrestle with another pet and would only want him to go to a home with another somewhat active pet. He has never chewed on my furniture or shoes but does enjoy dog toys and a sacrificial towel on occasion.
Benny deserves a wonderful, loving, and a happy home. He is very precious and has been a blessing.
If you are interested in adopting me, please visit to complete an adoption application. Contact Melinde Waddle at [email protected] and/or Nancy Walker at [email protected] for more information after you have filled out the application. The adoption fee to adopt Benji in Keller, TX is $200 to offset his vetting and to allow NBRAN to rescue more of these wonderful pets in need.
Transportation can be arranged up 1400 miles with the adopter being responsible for at least the last 100 miles.
Medical Note: He has kind of allergy eyes and does need some drops. We can send Animal Ophthalmology Report if interested. He is on Prozac, but I think with a family that works from home or retired, he would be perfect off of it. It does take a slow wean off. When he first came to his foster home, the poor boy was lost, afraid and didn’t know what was coming next. He also had a broke front foot and it has healed wrong, but no limps or problems. Vets say he is perfect as he is.
If you have any questions or would like to adopt TX/Benji
