Portia's story

　　Adoption fee on this dog is $300.

　　Portia is a 6 year old black and tan, female German Shepherd. She may have a mix of Belgian Malinois, which attributes to her smaller size of 50lbs, as well as her high energy. She was adopted as a one year old to a young couple with no children. They now have two young children and find they cannot meet Portia's high energy needs.

　　Portia is a very sweet girl who loves to give kisses and play keep away. She enjoys going for walks and runs, and plays amazingly well with the two young humans in her home (boys ages 2 and 4 years). When her physical and mental needs are being met, she is a relatively calm member of the household. While Portia is an incredibly loving girl who clearly wants to please her owners, she does have some issues of anxiety. She requires consistent mental and physical work, and is also currently taking over the counter supplements to maintain a healthier level of anxiety. Loud noises, i.e., fire works and thunder storms, are especially difficult for Portia to tolerate.

　　While she gets along well with the family cat, and pet friends she has been properly introduced to, she needs an owner that can provide proper attention to ensure the safety of pets and animals she does not know. Portia is house broken, knows how to use a dog door, responds well on a leash (with needed redirection around other animals) and knows basic obedience, including how to sit, lay down, shake, high five and roll over. She is not very food motivated, but she does respond well to positive reinforcement.

　　When Portia was in our program five years ago, she was fostered with other German Shepherds and did well. The experience of her recent owners is that Portia does not get along with small dogs and reacts badly toward them on leash. Regular exercise and continued leash training will be needed for this pint-sized energetic girl.
