Kendra quietly and respectively made a place in my home immediately. My fosters already consisted of a nursing family (four, 3-4 wk old pups) and senior Lab. They were not completely separated and from the start, Kendra displayed a healthy, yielding temperament that served her well in mixing in quickly and getting along well with the other balanced foster mates.
She was naturally respectful of the pups and their space. Even when the pups were old enough to approach her, they would try to nurse on her and then later puppy play. She always treated them like her own. One of the pups, Ella looked for Kendra all the time. Kendra was part of the village raising these pups and helping to demonstrate healthy boundaries. It was beautiful to watch the process she was part of and her calm demeanor.
I could see over the few weeks with us, her personality come alive more as she settled in. It was apparent this wasnt nurtured wherever she came from. She did really well with our routine walking twice daily, yard time to sun, naps and play. I think she just wants to know the rules and what is expected of her. Shes an unsure pleaser. There is more in there but by nature, she is sweet, even-tempered and loving. I dont think I heard her bark not once not to say in the right environment, shell remember shes a dog.
I had to coax her with treats because she didnt know come and would get shy and nervous when I attempted to guide her physically. She will drop to the floor and submit in a frozen like state. With the time she had here, we just worked on trust and organically following routine and the pack. She followed along a little unsure the first pack walk and by the time she transported, she was prancing confidently and taking in her new world. What also came natural to her is wanting to belong and be close.
She tended to stay in the kitchen at first where we had her set up but curious about what was going on elsewhere. Not requiring the center of attention, she was always in the background observing. Anytime I would engage her, she would just wiggle with excitement, just happy to be there. The first time she appeared in my bedroom on her own and jumped on the bed for a snuggle, made my heart sing. She had free run in my home and never disturbed anything. Doesn't mind being in the crate although you have to gently coax her in and she pottied outside!
Kendra is easy and already a great companion. With a little TLC, will continue to thrive. Even if she didnt get more patient training on the basics, shes a good girl and easy to handle as is. Shes probably not your rough and tumble girl but likes to be close and will lightly play. She still has a lot of world to explore and get familiar with. Im so happy for her!
