　　ON MAY 13, 1865 the last battle engagement of the Civil War occurred at Palmito Ranch on the Rio Grande River east of Brownsville, Texas. The small, meaningless battle's last death was Private John Jefferson Williams of the 34th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The 22-year-old Hoosier was most likely the last individual killed in action during the Civil War.
