CHEWY's story
`Chewy, tell us some of your favorite things.`
`Thanks for asking that. I love consistency, predictability and routine. Those things make me feel safe.`
`So does that mean you don`t really like change?`
`Yep. Change makes me nervous.`
`Can you tell us about an incident that happened with a door?`
`Um. Well. Do I have to? OK...I got really, really anxious after I was brought to the shelter and then went to a new home. The first day they left me alone I just had to get out. I mean, I didn`t know if they were coming back or not. So I chewed. Through a door. And got myself outside.`
`It`s OK, Chewy. We understand you were scared. Thanks for opening up about that experience.`
Separation anxiety can be managed with training but sometimes a dog may need anti-anxiety medication prescribed by a veterinarian. Chewy`s adopters will receive $200 towards a vet visit to discuss his anxiety. Funding comes from a grant from the ASPCA to The Friends of Anchorage Animal Care and Control.
