Description

  Beary's story

Adoption fee on this dog is $300.

Beary is a 4 year old black and tan female who was surrendered by her owners because they were unable to manage her multiple medical conditions. She came to us weighing 59 lbs and very underweight, missing much of her hair, hematomas on one ear and in need of dental care. Since she was relinquished, she has been treated for wide-spread skin and ear infections, provided a dental cleaning which involved pulling a few teeth, as well as removing a hematoma on the right ear. There is evidence that she had at least one litter of puppies in the past. Despite all these challenges, Beary has shown improvement in the regrowth of much of her beautiful coat and has gained 5 pounds. Her right ear, however, will remain flaccid and has had repeated infections. Her skin is also prone to infections, so a very limited ingredient, high quality dog food and no dog treats is best to help control her skin irritations.

In her first foster home, Beary successfully unlocked several doors, including her kennel and indoor locks with deadbolts, to search for her human. Secure containment is necessary when left alone until she learns her new routine. Once in human company, she is extremely calm and content to lay on her bed and show you her excellent house manners. She is housebroken and knows basic commands. As an only dog in her current foster home, she has settled in nicely and not escaped.

Beary is eager to go on walks and loves car rides, yet is very pleased to return to her home. She is crate trained and house-broken. She is learning to walk well on a leash. She is very social and curious to meet all humans and dogs, but no small dogs for this girl. Beary has shown some dominance around other dogs. We refer to her as the fun police, as she doesn't appreciate high energy dogs and tries to correct dogs that get excited, i.e., seeing squirrels or other dogs behind a fence. Learning her triggers to stop them before she escalates is key in keeping peace in a multiple dog household. She is especially easy as an only dog. She has not been with children, however if there are no other dogs in the home, we believe Beary would be gentle and patient.

She can get along with confident, calm male dogs, but should not be placed with other females dogs. She will interact with toys, but is most content with human company. She is affectionate yet has not been pushy about constant affection. She seems to get along with cats but may be engaged with the chase, so supervision and slow introductions are necessary.

Continued training, special food, oral flea treatments, exercise and socialization will go a long way for this worthy girl.
