Cadillac reached an all-time production record of 165,959 vehicles
for 1964, with the last rolling off the assembly line just as
demolition began to make room for new conveyor pits allowing
greater production capacity. Part of that success was due to a mild
styling update for 1964 including a new grille treatment wrapping
around the front fenders and the last appearance of Cadillac's
famed tailfins, this time with a discreet, fine-blade
motif. However, the big news for 1964 concerned Cadillac's powerful
V-8 engine, now enlarged to 429 cubic inches with 340 bhp and 480
pounds-feet of torque on tap. A road-test report by the UK's
Autocar described the '64 Cadillac experience, quoting a top speed
of 121.5 mph and a best run at 123 mph in "contemptuous ease,
achieved "with very little mechanical fuss or disturbance." The
Cadillac's handling, braking and overall road manners were also
praised. Additional advancements for 1964 included the
Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission, Comfort Control fully
automatic heating and air conditioning, and Twilight Sentinel
headlamp delay. Cadillac offerings for 1964 were organized along
